THE NATION BEAT: By adding improvisational elements of American jazz and funk to the rich folkloric traditions of Northeastern Brazil, SCOTT KETTNER'S NATION BEAT has created a vast repertoire of exciting original material. The NY-based band combines regional rhythms such as Maracatu, Coco, Baião and Mangue Beat with harmonies, full instrumental arrangements and second line rhythms, resulting in an innovative and compelling new sound. In full costume, The Nation Beat's intoxicating Maracatu rhythms and songs offer a unique live performance. The Nation Beat also works in collaboration with Maracatu/New York.
MARACATU NEW YORK: Maracatu N.Y. is New York's first and only Maracatu ensemble. We dedicate ourselves to the performance and knowledge of traditional Maracatu de Baque Virado and other musical styles from the Northeast of Brazil while fusing these elements with the New Orleans "Second Line" rhythms. Scott Kettner is the founder and artistic director.
